Going to a mall makes me desperately sad for these very reasons (and more, I guess). In the Moviegoer by Walker Percy there is much rumination of becoming "anybody" rather than "somebody."
Malls seem to manufacture anybodys.

Also, your point about the real cost of mall culture consumerism being exploitation of "developing" nations' workers is well made.
