Hating the Holidays: The Conclusion

Today is Christmas Eve.  The day before the day Jesus wasn't actually born.  But we celebrate it on this day anyway for reasons that I find to be telling of the integrity of popular Christianity.  However, Christmas Eve is still in parts of my mind a day that should be filled with hope for Jesus is coming.  The one who would show us a different way.  An alternative to the madness and insanity that surround us.  Yet I see little of it around me.  The Christmas season is to me a reminder of all things terrible about us.  A reminder that my own life is broken and that I am lonely.  Loneliness feels like such a disease.  The Holidays remind me that I am alone and this is the real reason why I hate the holidays.

We all know that Christmas time is the highest profit time of year for retailers.  One of the ways we have chosen to honor this Holy time of year is to show the world that we can buy shit better than anyone.  But I suppose the one gift that has me really up in arms this year are gift cards.  They look good on the surface.  You don't know what to buy for someone but your pretty sure they would love to spend money at store X so you buy them a gift card.  For most people I imagine it is just a lazy ass way to buy Christmas presents but it is also a scam.  If you bought someone a twenty five dollar gift card to Best Buy then Best Buy has just guaranteed that you are going to spend that money there.  It's not that they get to spend it there, they have to spend it there.  Cash may seem tacky but I've never regretted receiving cash over gift cards because I can spend it anyway that I need to.  If I have bills I can pay them.  If I'm hungry I can eat with it, or I can eat it.  But seriously folks, if you bought a gift card for someone please do better next year and if your thinking about buying one for someone please reconsider.  The spirit of giving worthwhile gifts are at stake here.

Read the paper today.  Started reading where a judge ruled against teaching intelligent design in the classroom.  Thought we had scored one for the good guys.  But then I read how Dick Cheney all the sudden decided it was of the utmost importance to cancel is tour-de-war and make it back just in time to shove the new budget up poor people's asses.

Jingle Bells, Jingle Bells,  We're cutting your welfare and child support benefits instead of taking money from multi-billion dollar pharmaceutical corporations so we can watch you die in the name of Jesus, Jingle all the WAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYY!

Happy Holidays (that's right holidays, not Christmas.  There's more than one, and what's more, WHO GIVES A FUCK WHAT IT'S CALLED!)
